The Role
We are seeking a strategic, collaborative, solution-oriented Legal Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel. Reporting to the VP, Head of Legal and Compliance, you will partner closely with cross-functional teams on a broad spectrum of legal and privacy matters. You will provide leadership and guidance on contractual negotiation, data privacy, and legal operations.
This role is ideal for someone excited to roll up their sleeves and work across the organization, representing the legal function in a tech- and AI-first environment—balancing legal requirements with innovative business solutions, adopting new technologies, and reimagining legacy workflows. You will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced setting that values creativity.

What you'll do

  • Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements, including NDAs, SAAS agreements and service provider agreements.
  • Manage and evolve the data privacy program and provide advice on legal aspects of data and data privacy.
  • Provide clear, actionable legal guidance on day-to-day operational matters that balances commercial priorities with risk management.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to assess legal risks and develop strategies that enable growth and innovation.
  • Contribute to the development of contractual templates, playbooks and best practices.
  • Lead and implement AI solutions within the legal and compliance team to improve efficiency and assist other teams to responsibly implement AI solutions.
  • Participate in the drafting and implementation of scalable governance processes.

What you bring

  • 5-8 years of experience in a legal role, preferably at a fintech, financial services and/or technology company.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to propose business oriented solutions.
  • Proven success working cross-functionally with different stakeholders.
  • Experience in privacy matters and contractual negotiation while staying hands-on with operations and execution.
  • Bilingualism (Full professional proficiency in French and English, both written and spoken) is required considering the necessity to interact on a regular basis with English-speaking colleagues across the country.
  • Comfort thriving in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Excitement for using AI, automation, and technology to modernize legal work.

Why Fig?

  • Unique opportunity to join a company in its scaling phase and shape the future of lending in Canada.
  • Competitive compensation, bonus, and benefits.
  • Retirement savings program with employer matching.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus health and wellness spending accounts.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave top-up.
  • Continuing education stipend for professional development.
  • Working Location: Hybrid with 1 day per week (Tuesdays) out of the Toronto office.
